Thousands of Manchester United and Southampton fans will pack into Wembley this Sunday, with millions more watching on TV screens around the world.

With nearly 1.5 million people attending matches in the EFL Cup this season — including Sunday’s final — the competition has also attracted an average live audience of 927,500 people per game so far, with the highest recorded figure totalling 1,576,000 for the Manchester United versus Manchester City tie in Round Four.

Sunday’s showpiece will be no different. The game is scheduled to be broadcast live in nearly 200 territories around the globe, and will be available to as many as one billion people worldwide.

With players from all corners of the earth in the United and Southampton squads, the audience will have a global feel too, as people from Australia to Zimbabwe tune in to see which side will lift the famous trophy.

Now in its 57th year, the EFL Cup has attracted over 80 million fans since inception and the competition as a whole has provided clubs with £25 million in gate receipts alone, with both of Sunday’s finalists receiving approximately £1 million in gate receipts.
