Newcastle United were the night’s big winners as EFL Cup Round Four kicked off on Tuesday.

The Magpies were a goal to the good and dominating proceedings, but the dismissal of Alan Browne for Preston saw the floodgates open.

Braces from Aleksandar Mitrovic and Mohamed Diame, coupled with goals from Matt Ritchie and Ayoze Perez, resulted in a 6-0 win in front of the 49,042 crowd at St James’ Park.

There were even more fans in attendance at Anfield, where Liverpool overcame Tottenham thanks to a Daniel Sturridge double. Vincent Janssen’s penalty gave Spurs hope, but last year’s losing finalists held on to advance.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was another to help himself to two goals, sending Arsenal through against Reading, while Hull disposed of Bristol City by two goals to one — defenders Harry Maguire and Michael Dawson scoring the goals to send the Tigers through.

Tuesday night’s final game was settled by penalties after a 2-2 draw between Leeds and Norwich at Elland Road.

Marco Silvestri saved three spot-kicks in the shoot-out, and teenager Ronaldo Vieira kept his nerve to send the Whites through into the Quarter-Finals.

On Wednesday, Manchester United came out on top in the Manchester derby thanks to Juan Mata's second-half strike.

Elsewhere, West Ham United shocked Chelsea by winning 2-1 at the London Stadium, and Southampton edged past Sunderland 1-0 to round off a record-breaking Round Four.
